Fabulous Friday Favs * The Sliver Lining To A Stomach Virus (No, Really)

Being sick sucks. I mean, there are the obvious reasons (symptoms). I won't go into them here but we all know what they are. Then there are the things that you can't do when you're sick. Like going to see one of your very favorite authors perform/read. In his home state. In a beautiful, historical theater. On a Friday Date night with The Hubbs. After looking forward to it for MONTHS.
Yup. Sick sucks. However, sick can have silver linings. Like after five days of a stomach virus that's apparently trying it's best to kill me (no, Mom, I don't have Ebola. Yes, that's what the urgent care doc told me), I've dropped eight of the twelve post marital bliss pounds I couldn't ditch. Bonus.

And sometimes through being sick you can make other folks happy. No, really. Like John and Beth from Greensboro, who also desperately wanted to go to the show tonight. I reluctantly posted my tickets on Craigslist this morning and John called, saying that if he could have them, they would make his wife's night. Done. They're his. And I think that kind of makes me a super hero. I'm going to go upstairs and dig in the kids' closets to see if I can find a cape. Wait. Nope. Can't. I'm still contagious apparently. <sigh> I'll just use my blanket and tie it around my neck instead.

That actually sounds like something David Sedaris (the author that John and Beth will get to see tonight) would say or do. Actually, he just may have a story about wearing a cape. Or a blanket around his neck. I can't recall for sure.

If you haven't read anything by him (and how the hell have you not? He's been around and writing great stuff for years), you should check him out on his Amazon page here. I mean, Amazon gave him his own page! I own every single book and have had the privilege of getting to see him read from Let's Explore Diabetes With Owls at a local bookstore. He even signed my copy. And drew me an elephant. It. Was. Awesome.

He writes in first person, telling you the hysterical tales of moving to and then growing up in North Carolina, as a transplant from New York. The stories of his younger years also include those of his brother and sisters (there were six of them total) and of his mom and dad (a man who apparently liked to, after coming home from work, remove his pants before dinner. Which had him at the dinner table in his boxers).

David will keep you in stitches as he tells you about his time out West and in NYC as a younger man post high school, and then more recently in France and England living with his partner Hugh and everything in-between. He even winds in a tail or two about his movie star sister Amy Sedaris (my favorite roll of hers to date is the character Rachel Hoffberg in Maid In Manhattan, but you may know her from her Tide, Downy and Bounce commercials). David has known tragedy (his mother and at least one sister have passed on) but he finds a message in every story and a story in every message. Read his books and you'll come away a better person.

So, John and Beth, The Hubbs will bring the tickets and meet you in the Wendy's parking lot (I tried to get him to meet you at The Waffle House at the same exit. It seemed more 'Craigslisty' to me. But he said that The Waffle House's iced tea sucks and Wendy's is better. I hadn't counted on him needing to feed his iced tea habit when I made the suggestion). I hope you guys have an amazing time tonight and I'm glad I could make your day. Send me a selfie so I can feel like I'm there. And tell David hi and thanks for me. To the rest of you, you're welcome.
